To choose is the most difficult part, the consummation thereof a pure delight! What will it be: the mouth-watering iconic Peruvian seafood dish called ceviche (raw fish, potatoes, hot chili peppers and onions marinated in lime juice), or the succulent swordfish cought on Peru’s northern coast; perhaps the tasty lomo saltado (beef stir-fry with onions, mixed potatoes and chilis), or even the anticuchos (grilled beef heart marinated in chili sauce); but what about the tamal (banana leaves stuffed with baked cornmeal, cheese and chicken)? This is the dilemma of many a visitor trying to choose from a menu in one of the cevicherias (restaurants), like the Costa Verde with its huge gourmet dinner buffet and stunning views over the ocean, lining the Avenida la Mar in the upscale cultural district Miraflores of Lima. The scintillating nightlife centres around the penas (bars), where, amongst all the other activities and shows, you can listen to música criolla, the typical Peruvian flute-and-drum folk music, a combination of Andean, European and African sounds and traditions, or the landó, the Peruvian version of the blues. Lima is situated in the narrow northern coastal region, west of the towering Andes mountain range, and the vast Amazon basin to the east of the range. This is where the conquistador, Francisco Pizarro, founded his headquarters in 1535, from where he started the Spanish rule over the conquered Inca kingdom. This coastal city was ideally situated in a valley surrounded by hills making it easy to defend, with a sheltered port, plenty of fresh water from the Rio Rimac, flowing from the snow-capped Andes, and with a mild climate. The ancient Inca capital, Cusco, lies high up in the Andes, highly unsuitable for Pizarro’s purpose. Consequently Lima was declared as the capital of the vast region conquered by the Spanish in the New World in Today Lima is a thriving city of about 7.5 million inhabitants, divided into about thirty districts. The most densely populated of them lie in the southern and northern areas, while the more upmarket districts, like the bohemian Barranco, or the elegant business district San Isidro, and the bustling Miraflores with its flowery parks, stretches down from the Central District to the beaches of the Pacific Ocean, the prime destinations for tourists. There are numerous places of interest to be discovered all over the city, such as historical sites in the City Center, or different museums displaying artifacts dating from the ancient pre-Colonial past. Surrounding the square, or in the immediate vicinity, you will find a number of important historical buildings, like the Government Palace and the Municipal Palace or Town Hall, built on the area where Pizarro intended building his own house, the twin-towered Lima Cathedral (1758), and the Archbishop’s Palace with its wooden balconies, Also San Augustine with its impressive baroque façade, La Merced with its entrance built from grey and pink stone, and San Agustin holding valuable paintings and sculptures in its cloister and sacristy.
